Uchiha Itachi, the man loved by all and hated by none. The master of genjutsu, who had many aces up sleeves during battle. His very existence is what you call a True Art. One of the most loyal shinobi, who slaughtered his own Uchiha clan in order to protect Hidden Leaf Village. In Spite of the sacrifice he made for hidden leaf, guess what he was called? A Traitor who slaughtered his own clan. And upon that he joined Akatsuki, an assassin group that is sworn enemy of Hidden Leaf. But after knowing the truth, everyone knows who the real Shinobi really is.
Before talking about Itachi powers, there is something important to mention. How much do you know about Japanese Mythology Gods?
Japanese Mythology Gods
Japan is a cultured country and we see that in most Anime. Above that, the Japanese are very disciplined who stick with those cultures and obey them consistently. I have been a fan of Japanese culture and mythology ever since I started watching anime. Amaterasu, Izanami, Izanagi, Tsukuyomi, and Susanoo are considered to be the major Gods of Japanese Mythology. Some of you might relate to where this is leading to.
Izanagi And Izanami
Izanagi no Mikoto and Izanami no Mikoto, are the creator deities of the Japanese Shinto Religion. Shinto Religion is the oldest religion in Japan which originally meant “ways of God”. Shinto Deities are called Kami(God). According to the ancient Japanese Myth, both Izanami and Izanagi have given birth to many deities (gods) and islands in Japan.

While performing a marriage ritual ceremony, where Izanami and Izanagi were supposed to circle in opposite directions of the pillar. As soon as they meet at a point where they started, Izanami confesses Izanagi for the marriage. As a result, the first child was born a miscarriage and was named Ebisu. Ebisu, in Japanese mythology, is one of the Shichi-fuku-jin (“Seven Gods of Luck”), the patron of fishermen and tradesmen.
It is said that a Male deity is supposed to confess before a female Deity. Then they again performed the ritual, and this time Izanagi confessed first. And many islands came into existence. Both Izanagi and Izanami were happy until the Kagu-tsuchi(fire god) was born. While giving birth to the fire god, Izanami went through a terrible pain ordeal. Izanami dies after giving birth to Kagu-tsuchi. Angered Izanagi kills Kagu-tsuchi(fire god) with Ame-no-Ohabari.
Ame-no-Ohabari also known as Sword Of Totsuka
Ame-no-Ohabari, in Japanese mythology, also known as Sword of Totsuka, was wielded by Izanagi to kill his offspring, Kagutsuchi.
The Sword Of Totsuka is not a specific weapon in Japanese mythology. Rather, it refers to the immense ancient swords wielded by Shinto gods.
Most famously, Storm God Susanoo no Mikoto used one such sword to slay the multi-headed Yamata no Orochi Serpent in Izumo. This reminds me of the final battle between Itachi and Sasuke, where Itachi’s Susanoo kills Orochimaru using Sword Of Totsuka.
Death Of Izanami
After the death of Izanami, Izanagi wandered many islands and holy places to resurrect his wife. But his search eventually leads him to Yomi(The Underworld). On entering Yomi, he was finally able to see Izanami. But to his surprise, Izanami was already consumed by Yomi. The Izanami he found was a corpse and it was forbidden from returning to the realm of the living.
Horrified, Izanagi was disappointed and needed a sacred bath to purify himself. He tries to escape the Underworld, on seeing him escape, Izanami sends dead corpse after him.
Amatersu, Tsukuyomi And Susanoo
On finally returning to the outside world, Izanagi blocked the entrance to Yomi with an enormous stone. Heartbroken God Izanagi bathed in the sea to purify himself as he had come in contact with the dead. Tears fell from his eyes remembering Izanami, this in return gave birth to many Islands. As he started to bathe, a number of deities(Gods) came into existence.
The major Gods of Shinto came into existence: Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess, was born when Izanagi washed his left eye. Tsukynomi, the Moon God, was born from his right eye. Susanoo, the God of Storm, was born from his nose.
Japanese Mythology In Naruto
After reading all that, a Naruto Fan can definitely relate Japanese Mythology to Itachi Uchiha. The creator of Naruto, Masashi Kishimoto gave a perfect tribute to Japanese Mythology Gods by creating Itachi Uchiha. Not just Itachi but also in creating Uchiha Clan. Many fans consider Itachi a God-level character, and I am to be one of them.
Itachi is one of the very rare characters in Naruto, who can use both Izanami and Izanagi. And the character is capable of using Amaterasu perfectly in spite of health issues. Moreover, Itachi possessed Susanoo, which wielded the Sword Of Totsuka. Itachi’s Susanoo used Sword of Totsuka and is Orange in color. This orange color shows that Totsuka Blade was used to Kill the Fire God by Izanagi. I finally came to the conclusion why the Itachi’s Susanoo Sword is Orange in color, and it makes sense as fire is orange in color. And Itachi is the master of genjutsu who can use Tsukuyomi.
Though Itachi Uchiha possesses most of the powers related to Japanese Mythology Gods. He is not the only one. Many members from the Uchiha clan could cast the Izanagi spells. And those who awakened Mangekyo Sharingan could even use Susanoo.
Uchiha Clan And Ancient Mythology
Shisui Uchiha: Kotoamatsukami
Shisui Uchiha had the most powerful genjutsu in the Naruto Anime. He had awakened Mangekyo Sharingan at every young age. He was like an elder brother to Itachi, in terms of a brother from another mother. His genjutsu is considered to be very powerful, named Kotoamatsukami. In Shinto, Kotoamatsukami(“Heavenly kami”) is the collective name for the first gods which came into existence at the time of the creation of the universe.
Sasuke Uchiha: Kirin And Indra’s Arrow
Next up is Sasuke Uchiha the main Side Character of Naruto Anime. Sasuke was the younger brother of Itachi related to blood. Itachi slaughtered the entire Uchiha clan but he was unable to kill his own brother. Sasuke awakened Mangekyo Sharingan after Itachi’s death and he was able to use Amaterasu with help of Itachi’s eyes. He is the only character aside from Itachi who we have seen using Amaterasu. Moreover, Sasuke excelled in Ninjutsu and had an extremely powerful lightning release technique that looked like a Dragon called Kirin. The Kirin is a chimerical beast resembling a deer with scales like a dragon’s covering its body. Sasuke Susanoo’s ultimate weapon is Indra’s Arrow. Indra is the God of Hinduism.
Madara Uchiha: Infinite Tsukuyomi
Next up, Madara Uchiha, the Ghost of Uchiha is the strongest Uchiha member. Just his presence caused fear among the allied Shinobi forces. His ultimate dream was to bring peace by casting genjutsu on every single person. This ultimate genjutsu was Infinite Tsukuyomi. The Infinite Tsukuyomi is a genjutsu that traps the entire world in an illusion, enslaving them in a dream.
Obito Uchiha: Kamui
Following the dream of Madara Uchiha, Obito started the 4th Great Ninja War in order to cast Infinite Tsukuyomi. In the rage of Rin’s Death, Obito enters the dark side and awakens his Mangekyo Sharingan. The awakening of Mangekyo Sharingan and Revenge gives Obito enormous power, he even enables Kamui. A Kamuy is a spiritual or divine being in Ainu mythology, a term denoting a supernatural entity composed of or possessing spiritual energy.
Itachi Uchiha Of The Leaf
Talking about the first appearance of Itachi, he had one badass entry alongside Kisame. They came face to face against Hidden Leaf Shinobi Asuma and Kurenai. Kurenai tries to put Itachi under genjutsu, but she forgot who she was dealing with. Itachi, the master of genjutsu, in return uses reverse genjutsu and traps Kuranei in her own move.
Itachi Uses Amaterasu And Tsukuyomi
In addition, he managed to awaken the Mangekyo Sharingan at a very young age which gave him access to the power of Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, and Susanoo. Using these powers, Itachi was extremely difficult to take on and defeat in battle. Kakashi Hatake, the best side character from the Naruto series, comes to rescue Kurenai and Asuma. And it was at this moment we see Itachi casting Tsukuyomi on Kakashi. Kakashi was hospitalized for three straight days after coming in contact with Tsukuyomi. Moreover, he also uses Tsukuyomi, on his brother Sasuke, to which Kisame states Tsukuyomi as Nightmare Realm.
The powerful Ninjutsu that Itachi possesses is Amaterasu. While escaping from Jiraiya Toad Mouth Trap, Itachi uses the black flame(Amaterasu) to break through the trap. In addition, Jiraiya had to use a Fire seal Jutsu to encounter the black flame. It is said that if Itachi uses Amaterasu on the jinjuriki(Tail Beast Vessel), then it is all over for them.
One of the ultimate jutsus of the Uchiha clan is Izanagi. Once you activate it, you can rewrite your life up to a minute ago, hence giving you the ability to betray reality itself, and allowing you to sort of come back after you’ve died.
Since every Uchiha member could use Izanagi, hatred was born among them. Thus Izanami came into play, Izanami was created to control Izanagi
Izanami is regarded as one of the most powerful Visual Prowess. That traps the target in an infinite loop. The loop is based on the caster’s memory that will never fade unless the target accepts reality and change their path of life. And there is no way to avoid Izanami.
In the battle against Kabuto, we see Itachi casting Izanami on Kabuto, and this is where Itachi talks about the past and Izanami.
Lastly, to those who think Itachi is an overrated character, I guess they have lost their eyesight just like Shusui. Itachi is not overrated, he is just built differently and he deserves the love he gets.
